Background
If you have your own web site, it is probably running on a hosted dedicated or shared server. in any case, you may want to monitor its availability level, so you know, whether from a message on your working computer or by email, whenever your site is down. There are a few free solutions for this besides you having to build your own monitoring solution.
Recommendation
Our first recommendation, which works great if you also have a computer turned on pretty much all the time or at least whenever you’re working on a computer, is Website Monitoring. While the UI is fairly simple and old-looking, the tool works very well.
An interesting alternative is to use the Montastic web-based monitoring service. While it obviously won’t alert you with an icon in the tray bar as Website Monitoring does, and while it cannot check with as high a frequency, it does alert by emails and has the advantage of performing 24/7 monitoring.
