As time goes, you may forget what your computer is made of, and what the status is for your various security systems. It is then recommended to have an audit of your system, and this can be done very easily with some free software tools. For this type of tool it is also critical that the tool remains actively maintained, so it keeps on supporting new hardware, drivers and software; this is the case for all of our recommendations, as far as we know.

Recommendations

One tool we want to recommend is Belarc Advisor; it provides a thorough report in your web browser after having scanned your computer with an exe you are asked to download. It has a strong focus on security.

PC Wizard 2008 instead is a desktop-based tool and it focuses mostly on detailing your computer configuration in all of its aspects. It also has a very nice benchmarking feature that can tell you how your system compares with others, for each specific component.

SIW is our last recommendation though not the least. It provides extremely detailed information about your system and also digs into hidden passwords, installed codecs and much more.
