Screen Capture Software

Background

Screen capture applications allows you taking a snapshot of a window, a control, an area of your screen. Some of the tools have advanced features such as hotkey support, multiple format outputs, image post-processing such as background transparency, sending to another application, integrated image editor, auto-scrolling the captured window, etc. They differ by their ease-of-use, features and output quality.

Recommendation

There are plenty of such tools and recommending one is not easy. The first tool we recommend is ScreenShot Captor. This tool has pretty much every feature you can think of and is a high-quality application; in short, it works really well. Since the latest releases the look and feel of the main menu has also been greatly improved. Particularly worthwhile are the auto-scroll which, although not fast, works very well, and the support for transparent background, quite useful for capturing non-square windows.

For those who prefer a simpler and easier-to-use application, albeit with a few less functionalities, the tool we developed at Kerkia, Signo, will work very well. It includes a very complete screen capture utility, can be driven by hotkeys or tray menus and has most desired features albeit no auto-scroll. It also features an output to the clipboard, a simple feature other tools often lack, and to Team Foundation System, a feature that QA engineers working with with Visual Studio and Team System may find invaluable, as well as a built-in image editor.
