Sandbox

Background

When browsing the web a lot, installing many different software tools or simply doing regular work on a computer, it is unfortunately quite easy to lose privacy, to get various forms of malware, to corrupt your OS with bad programs, etc. For all of those cases, it is very nice to use a sandbox, which acts as an isolated space from which you can work in an isolated manner. You can then corrupt or damage that space without impacting the rest of your system.

Recommendation

Our recommendation is the free version of Sandboxie. It cannot be used for free for commercial purposes, has a nag screen after the trial period and has a few limitations compare to the paid version (no support, only one sandbox at the same time), but it nevertheless is a very worthwhile product that performs very well compared to other alternatives. It also includes a simplified mode for safe browsing and running any program from within the sandbox by just creating a specific sandboxed version for it.
